EVENTS
USS
Republic Summer Pool Party
12:00 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2008
Hosted by and in the home of Ensign 3rd Class Hal Doby
4651 Cedar Brook Drive, Conyers GA 30094 |
Ensign
3rd Class Hal Doby is pleased to invite all members
of the USS Republic, as well as all our friends in
Stargate Atlanta, KAG Atlanta, the Atlanta OutWorlders, the
USS Atlanta and all other STARFLEET chapters in Region
2, to "Dobywood" in Conyers for a full day of fun,
food and water on Saturday, July 26! Starting around
noon, we'll open the pool to anybody that wants to splash
around and have fun. Since the last time we were at
Ensign Doby's home, there have been some major renovations,
including a $4,000 update of the pool area. If you stay
into the evening, you'll get to see the pool's new built-in
"light show." This feature has Ensign Doby's neighbors
sitting out on their patios watching his pool in action all
night long!
Repeating what
was a lot of fun back in the spring, our event meal will be
tacos and fajitas. Ensign Doby and his partner, Friend
of the Republic David McDonald, will provide
ground taco meat as well as strips of beef and chicken along
with fixings for fajitas, tacos, nachos and tostadas. Everyone
is asked to bring a side dish or dessert to go with these
Mexican favorites.
There is a limited
number of outdoor chairs around the pool, so if you can bring
a folding lawn chair, it might come in handy. Since
it's a pool party, don't forget to bring your swim trunks
and a towel to dry off with! The Republic will
be providing ice and nonalcoholic beverages for your enjoyment.
The event is BYOB, so should you choose to bring spirits,
please enjoy yourself responsibly.
The event will
be an all-day affair and go on as long as everyone wishes
to stay, so feel free to arrive as early or as late as you're
able. Ensign Doby will have his large screen TV
screening movies and other programs of interest in his theater
room for when you want to take a break from the great outdoors.
This invitation
is open to all metro area science fiction fans, as well as
any one else that would enjoy a good time. The command
and crew of the USS Republic look forward to seeing
you there!
"Dobywood"
is located just south of the city of Conyers off of State
Highway 20, about 20 miles southeast of the Interstates 20
and 285 interchange in DeKalb County. Click the link
below for detailed driving directions.

Star
Trek Night with the Atlanta
OutWorlders
8:00 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2008
Hosted by and in the home of Alan Siler
2582 Addison Drive, Doraville GA 30340 |
Let's
join our friends, the Atlanta
OutWorlders,
for a night each month that celebrates the quintessential
American science fiction television franchise: Star Trek.
Each month, we'll explore a different theme by seeing episodes
taken from all of the show's TV incarnations: Star Trek,
The Animated Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space
Nine, Voyager and yes... even Enterprise.
Few television shows, particularly sci-fi, have had
the impact on American culture that Star Trek has had.
For the month of August, the theme is "Cold as Ice (The
Andorians)."
Driving Directions:
Take I-85 to the Chamblee-Tucker
Rd. exit (that’s the first exit inside I-285 on the NE side
of the city). If you’re traveling N on I-85, you would turn
left onto Chamblee-Tucker.
Go through the first light, turn
right at the second light (Shallowford Rd).
Take the immediate next right turn
onto Addison Dr.
Go through the first stop sign; we’re
the 5th house on the left. Mailbox has very reflective
numbers.

USS
Republic launches shuttle USS Exeter NCC-1706;
Exeter holds first meeting |
Commanding
Officer, Republic, is pleased to announce that we have
officially launched our first shuttle under my command. Based
in Jacksonville, Florida, the USS Exeter NCC-1706 is
under the command of Commander John R. Sims, with whom
I have been working since April towards this goal. Cmdr
Sims recruited the required number of potential crewmembers
to launch a new shuttle in May and the shuttle received its
official STARFLEET name and registry in June. Other
newly recruited members of the Republic who will be
assigned to the Exeter upon its commissioning next
year include Ensign Hyo Soon Yoo, Ensign Jordan
Cain, Ensign Julie Cain, Ensign Ryan McDowell
and Ensign Chris Hamm.
The USS Exeter NCC-1706 held its first organizational
meeting on Sunday, June 22, 2008. Commander Sims
submitted the following report:
At 5:30 p.m. EST, the core members of our chapter-in-training
convened at Commander John R. Sims' quarters. The
members were Ensign Hyo Soon Yoo, Ensign Chris "Tex"
Hamm and Ensign Ryan McDowell. Although we
were expecting three other members to attend, they bowed out
at the last minute due to personal reasons that the Commander
deemed justified.
During the meeting, we discussed
STARFLEET, our place in it and what we as a chapter can do
to enhance its strength, short-term goals such as OTS and
OCC exams, filing MSRs and recruitment ideas.
We also discussed the delegation
of duties as our chapter grows and raising funds for a web
site and newsletter, costuming, attending conventions and
accommodations by selling personal items and collectibles,
as well as artistic creations by the CO and XO on eBay. The
CO has been selling his works on eBay since 2002 and his perfect
rating will help facilitate this. The CO's user name
is "moonwalkerjohn."
Other activities discussed were volunteering
with the local Museum of Science & History, landing parties
to the zoo, local theatre and dinners out. Not to mention
our attending the upcoming Vulkon in Orlando in October in
full Exeter uniforms!
Long-term plans are to help the Fleet
by recruitment, staying active on all fronts, and to set an
example for others to follow. Just as our mothership, the
Republic, has done under the command of Captain Eric
L. Watts!
After all the business was completed,
we adjourned to some incredible Korean dishes prepared by
my yeoman, Ensign Hyo Soon Yoo. The treats included
beef tips in garlic, noodles and vegetables and sushi.
We gathered around the TV and watched
the Star Trek: New Voyages episode "In Harm's Way."
Seeing as this fan film as well as Starship Exeter
inspired me to return to the Fleet, it only seemed appropriate.
Afterwards, we discussed meeting
again at the end of July and bid our farewells. Overall,
the meeting went very well and this new chapter has a long
and prosperous future. |

Ensign Ryan McDowell and Ensign Hyo Soon Yoo

first meeting.
Commander John R. Sims presided
over the first organizational meeting of the USS Exeter
NCC-1706 on Sunday, June 22, 2008.

Commanding
Officer, Republic, congratulates Commander Sims and
his crew on the Exeter's first meeting and is committed
to working with the Exeter over the next eight months
towards their official commissioning ceremony at the 2009

ABOUT
THE REPUBLIC
|
The
USS Republic NCC-1371 is a chapter of STARFLEET
International (SFI) and a member of STARFLEET Region 2. Commissioned
on May 14, 1988 at Dixie-Trek, the Republic currently
has 51 active members (as of July 24) and is one of the
largest chapters of STARFLEET in the world. The
Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule
of events for its members, frequently partnering with
other local science fiction groups in the Atlanta area
for joint activities, but does not hold meetings on a
consistently fixed date each month.
Membership in the Republic includes membership
in STARFLEET International. Annual dues are $25
per person for both groups (family discounts are available
with certain conditions and restrictions). Membership
in the Republic includes a subscription to our
award-winning quarterly paper newsletter, The Sovereign
Star, access to our YahooGroups message board, voting
privileges in chapter elections and a personalized laminated
membership card which entitles the member to receive discounts
or rebates on products and services offered by our Member
Benefits Program Partners. Additional information
on Republic membership and how to join can be found
on our award-winning web site.

FIFTEEN
YEARS AGO ABOARD THE REPUBLIC
From the Center Seat
by Captain Kelly Hilliard
|
Oh
baby, yeah... what? What's that blinking light mean? Oh,
that's the intraship comm indicator. Yikes! Oh,
uh, attention all hands---this is the captain speaking. This
month is devoted to fun AND work. The fun parts
are our annual picnic at Stone Mountain on the 21st of August
and Six Flags on the _th of September. The work
part is elections are upon us again. Nominations need
to be sent in now. There are also amendments
to the by-laws that need to be made to correct problems
that the ATTR created when it went bimonthly. These
issues will be covered in greater detail further in this
issue.
Our efforts to raise money for MDA were semi-successful. Republic
attendance was low for a variety of reasons. But
those who did attend raised over $240 for MDA. MDA,
on the other hand, was lacking. Media coverage
that was promised never showed. No rep from MDA
was present, no poster child was sent. It seems
the representative we were working with got sacked and they
didn't want to have anything to do with whatever she was
working on. As a result, our participation in
the MDA telethon is up in the air. Plans were to have
a remote at American Adventures. Now? Who
knows. I'll keep you informed.
As you might have heard, Region 2 won the bid for next year's
National Conference. It will be in Orlando on
June 17, 18, and 19. I have also been selected
to chair the Hangover Breakfast. I will need
assistance in order to present it in the manner that Region
2 deserves. Any who are interested, please contact
me for more information. This is the first conference
in the southeast and I encourage all Republic members that
if they attend just one con next year, that this be it. Let's
show Starfleet what Region 2 is all about! |
