Star
Trek Night with the Atlanta
OutWorlders
8:00 p.m. Friday, September 26, 2008
Hosted by and in the home of Alan Siler
2582 Addison Drive, Doraville GA 30340 |
Let's
join our friends, the Atlanta
OutWorlders,
for a night each month that celebrates the quintessential
American science fiction television franchise: Star Trek.
Each month, we'll explore a different theme by seeing episodes
taken from all of the show's TV incarnations: Star Trek,
The Animated Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space
Nine, Voyager and yes... even Enterprise.
Few television shows, particularly sci-fi, have had
the impact on American culture that Star Trek has had.
For the month of September, the theme is "Ritual Combat."
Driving Directions:
Take I-85 to the Chamblee-Tucker
Rd. exit (that’s the first exit inside I-285 on the NE side
of the city). If you’re traveling N on I-85, you would turn
left onto Chamblee-Tucker.
Go through the first light, turn
right at the second light (Shallowford Rd).
Take the immediate next right turn
onto Addison Dr.
Go through the first stop sign; we’re
the 5th house on the left. Mailbox has very reflective
numbers.

NEWS
& ANNOUNCEMENTS
Commanding
Officer elections coming in December |
Captain
Eric L. Watts' first full two-year term as Commanding
Officer of the USS Republic will soon be coming to
a close, and all members in good standing will soon be asked
to cast their vote for the candidate they want to lead and
administrate this chapter for the next two years.
According to Section 04:05 of the STARFLEET Membership
Handbook, "Chapter Chairperson" (page 18, January
2005 edition), "The Chapter Chairperson, also known as
the chapter Commanding Officer (CO), plays an extremely important
role in the day-to-day operations of STARFLEET. The
CO represents STARFLEET to the members of their chapter, and
likewise, through regular reports, represents the opinions
and needs of their members to STARFLEET. A CO of
a shuttle is required to be a graduate of the Officer Training
School (OTS), while the CO of a chapter must be a graduate
of both OTS and the Officer Command College (OCC)." Also,
per Section 04:09, "Both the Commanding Officer and Executive
Officer must be at least 18 years of age."
As of September 14, 2008, there are five members of the Republic
who hold the necessary credentials to hold the office of Commanding
Officer. They are:
Lt JG David Churvis
Captain Matt Ebeling
Commander Brian Holloway
Commander John R. Sims
Captain Eric L. Watts
Any officer on the list above who wishes to announce his candidacy
for the position of Commanding Officer should notify
the current CO anytime before November. Any
member of the Republic not listed above who wishes
to run for the office must first take and pass the OTS and
OCC exams administrated by Starfleet Academy. Information
on these exams can be found on the Starfleet
Academy web site.
Captain Watts is willing to serve a second term as the Republic's
CO. If any other eligible person announces his
or her candidacy, paper ballots will be mailed to each member
in good standing in November. Cast ballots can
then be mailed to the chapter's mailing address or delivered
by hand at the Republic's Christmas Party in December. Ballots
will be counted by three noncandidate members and the election
results announced during the evening. The new Commanding
Officer, if any, will officially assume office on January
1. |

ABOUT
THE REPUBLIC
|
The
USS Republic NCC-1371 is a chapter of STARFLEET
International (SFI) and a member of STARFLEET Region 2. Commissioned
on May 14, 1988 at Dixie-Trek, the Republic currently
has 72 active members (as of September 6) and is now the
largest chapter of STARFLEET in the world. The
Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule
of events for its members, frequently partnering with
other local science fiction groups in the Atlanta area
for joint activities, but does not hold meetings on a
consistently fixed date each month.
Membership in the Republic includes membership
in STARFLEET International. Annual dues are $25
per person for both groups (family discounts are available
with certain conditions and restrictions). Membership
in the Republic includes a subscription to our
award-winning quarterly paper newsletter, The Sovereign
Star, access to our YahooGroups message board, voting
privileges in chapter elections and a personalized laminated
membership card which entitles the member to receive discounts
or rebates on products and services offered by our Member
Benefits Program Partners. Additional information
on Republic membership and how to join can be found
on our award-winning web site.

YEARS AGO ABOARD THE USS REPUBLIC
From the Center Seat
by Captain Jeff Kirkland
|
Thanks
for the confidence you have in me when you elected me as
your new captain. I have asked Tonya Spanks to
be my XO, and she has accepted this position. Edmund
Trafford is going to stay on as the editor of ATTR
[And to the REPUBLIC], and Mike Henigan has agreed
to stay on as Chief of Operations. I have created
a new position of Publisher, and Rear Admiral Kelly Hilliard
has accepted this position.
I have some ideas for ongoing Starfleet projects as well
as local projects. Since Challenge of the Heart
has become a permanent project, I would like all of the
ship to help out. There will be more later in
the report from the IOC.
Our dues have been changed for the better. You
will no longer have to join Starfleet and the Republic. Your
dues will cover your Starfleet dues and your Republic dues. If
you want the Starfleet Communiqué, it will
cost extra. The dues are going to be $17, which
includes Republic dues and Starfleet dues. The
Communiqué will cost you $10 more. If
you have any questions, contact Kelly Hilliard or Mike Henigan.
To all members: if you have still not filled out your medical
form for the USS Republic, you may be turned down to do
on an away team out of town. This is for your
protection if you are out of town and cannot speak for yourself. There
is another copy of the medical form reprinted at the back
of this ATTR.
From the IC:
Challenge of the Heart
If you were at the 1995 International Conference in Atlanta,
you know that we started a six-month program to educate
people about HIV/AIDS. This program has been made
a permament program with Starfleet. On Saturday
morning at the opening ceremonies, Admiral Coyote, who works
with the school system in Kansas City, stated that about
one-third of her elementary students were HIV-positive.
In the Challenge of the Heart seminar, we learned what the
money we sent for this project went for and other ways we
can help raise funds for the educational purpose.
One piece of educational material is an article that was
given to us by Center One and Broward Community Foundation
and Stephen J. Fallon. This article, "Live
Long and Prosper! -- Important Facts You Need to Know to
Stay Safe From HIV/AIDS" is reprinted at the back of
this issue of ATTR.
The Hershey's Company, Kodak, and Hefty have agreed to help
also by sending in the UPC bar codes. See "Starfleet
Challenge of the Heart -- Project Hershey" at the end
of this ATTR issue. I hope that you will
help in this project also. |
