USS
Republic Fall Dinner & Business Meeting
6:00 p.m. Saturday, October 18, 2008
Hosted by and in the home of Ensign Naomi Hemingway
2318 Hampton Drive, Decatur GA 30035
Phone (678) 481-8792 |

Ensign
Naomi Hemingway welcomes all members and friends of
the Republic to her new home in Decatur for
our Fall Dinner & Business Meeting.
|
The lovely
and vivacious Ens Naomi Hemingway has graciously offered
to host the Republic's Fall Dinner & Business
Meeting in her home in Decatur on Saturday, October 18,
beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The Republic typically holds two business meetings
a year, one in the spring and one in the fall, to set the
chapter's course for the following six months. At
this meeting, we'll be making specific plans for chapter activities
from November through next April, including the upcoming Commanding
Officer election and our annual Christmas Party in December. Members
who wish to be more involved in the Republic's operations
are especially encouraged to attend. As always,
the Republic's many friends and guests are invited
to join us.
This dinner meeting will be a potluck! Ens
Hemingway will provide plenty of her famously delicious chicken
wings, which were such a hit at our 20th Year Celebration
STARFLEET Reception in June. Republic will provide
paper goods and a selection of canned sodas. Attending
members and guests are asked to bring a hearty side dish or
dessert. Note: Our host respectfully
requests that, due to religious customs, no pork dishes be
served in her home. This event is also BYOB;
adults who partake are expected to imbibe responsibly.
This event will begin at 6:00 p.m. Members and
guests bringing side dishes are asked to arrive no later than
6:30. The business meeting is scheduled to begin
around 7:00 and will likely last between a half-hour to an
hour. Following the business meeting, we'll have
a variety of entertainments available: a variety of Star
Trek board games to play, a selection of Star Trek
videos to watch, or just hang around and chat with your fellow
members!
Ens Hemingway's home is located in the Snapfinger Woods area
of Decatur, just south of Miller Grove Middle School off Miller
Road, and accessible by MARTA on Bus
Route 111 from Indian Creek Station. Carpooling
is encouraged. Click the link below for a map and
driving directions.

Star
Trek Night with the Atlanta
OutWorlders
8:00 p.m. Friday, October 24, 2008
Hosted by and in the home of Alan Siler
2582 Addison Drive, Doraville GA 30340
|
Let's
join our friends, the Atlanta
OutWorlders, for a night each month that celebrates
the quintessential American science fiction television franchise:
Star Trek. Each month, we'll explore a different theme
by seeing episodes taken from all of the show's TV incarnations:
Star Trek, The Animated Series, The Next Generation,
Deep Space Nine, Voyager and yes... even Enterprise.
Few television shows, particularly sci-fi, have had
the impact on American culture that Star Trek has had.
For the month of October, the theme is "Ghost Stories."
Driving Directions:
Take I-85 to the Chamblee-Tucker
Rd. exit (that’s the first exit inside I-285 on the NE side
of the city). If you’re traveling N on I-85, you would turn
left onto Chamblee-Tucker.
Go through the first light, turn
right at the second light (Shallowford Rd).
Take the immediate next right turn
onto Addison Dr.
Go through the first stop sign; we’re
the 5th house on the left. Mailbox has very reflective
numbers.

USS
Republic's web site moved to new host |
Commanding
Officer, Republic, is pleased to announce that the
chapter's domain name registry and hosting services have been
moved. A new host was needed in order to prevent
the web site from being shut down for exceeding its "traffic
allotment" on our previous hosting service, DotEasy,
towards the end of each month, which happened again at the
end of September. There are no such traffic restrictions
on DreamHost, so there should be no further disruptions in
service. We are especially grateful to Region 2
Chief of Computer Operations GSGT Dave Lowe of the
USS Tiberius of St. Petersburg, Florida, for handling
this DNS change and for hosting our web site on his server. |
Commanding
Officer elections coming in December |
Captain
Eric L. Watts' first full two-year term as Commanding
Officer of the USS Republic will soon be coming to
a close, and all members in good standing will soon be asked
to cast their vote for the candidate they want to lead and
administrate this chapter for the next two years.
According to Section 04:05 of the STARFLEET Membership
Handbook, "Chapter Chairperson" (page 18, January
2005 edition), "The Chapter Chairperson, also known as
the chapter Commanding Officer (CO), plays an extremely important
role in the day-to-day operations of STARFLEET. The
CO represents STARFLEET to the members of their chapter, and
likewise, through regular reports, represents the opinions
and needs of their members to STARFLEET. A CO of
a shuttle is required to be a graduate of the Officer Training
School (OTS), while the CO of a chapter must be a graduate
of both OTS and the Officer Command College (OCC)." Also,
per Section 04:09, "Both the Commanding Officer and Executive
Officer must be at least 18 years of age."
As of October 12, 2008, there are five members of the Republic
who hold the necessary credentials to hold the office of Commanding
Officer. They are:
Lt JG David Churvis
Captain Matt Ebeling
Commander Brian Holloway
Commander John R. Sims
Captain Eric L. Watts
Any officer on the list above who wishes to announce his candidacy
for the position of Commanding Officer should notify
the current CO anytime before November. Any
member of the Republic not listed above who wishes
to run for the office must first take and pass the OTS and
OCC exams administrated by Starfleet Academy. Information
on these exams can be found on the Starfleet
Academy web site.
Captain Watts is willing to serve a second term as the Republic's
CO. If any other eligible person announces his
or her candidacy, paper ballots will be mailed to each member
in good standing in November. Cast ballots can
then be mailed to the chapter's mailing address or delivered
by hand at the Republic's Christmas Party in December. Ballots
will be counted by three noncandidate members and the election
results announced during the evening. The new Commanding
Officer, if any, will officially assume office on January
1. |

ABOUT
THE REPUBLIC
|
Commissioned
on May 14, 1988 at Dixie-Trek, the USS Republic
NCC-1371 is a chapter of STARFLEET International (SFI)
and a member of STARFLEET Region 2. The Republic
currently has 68 active members (as of October
12) and is one of the largest chapters of STARFLEET in
the world. The Republic plans and coordinates
an active schedule of events for its members, frequently
partnering with other local science fiction groups in
the Atlanta area for joint activities, but does not hold
meetings on a consistently fixed date each month.
Membership in the Republic includes membership
in STARFLEET International. Annual dues are $25
per person for both groups (family discounts are available
with certain conditions and restrictions). Membership
in the Republic includes a subscription to our
award-winning quarterly magazine, The Sovereign Star,
access to our YahooGroups message board, voting privileges
in chapter elections and a personalized laminated membership
card which entitles the member to discounts and rebates
on products and services offered by our Member Benefits
Program partners. Additional information on Republic
membership and how to join is on our award-winning web
site.

YEARS AGO ABOARD THE USS REPUBLIC
From the Center Seat
by Captain Kelly Hilliard
|
Well,
the summer's winding down finally, and none too soon. This
year's con season has really been a busy one. By
the time you read this, I imagine Vulkon Atlanta will be
over and we'll be able to catch our breaths.
SciTrek has decided to postpone our debut until December
during the Festival of Trees. There we will help
advertise the coming of the Star Trek exhibit from the Smithsonion
in January. Uniforms are a must for most of these
activities. So, if you're interested, you might
want to find or make up a uniform. However, we will
be doing the Halloween parties for the kids right before,
so for all those of you who have uniforms, I hereby put
out the call for volunteers for this worthy cause. Call
me at my home and leave a message (587-4669).
A special note of appreciation goes to those members of
the Republic who responded to Gail Fuller's recent request
for dry foods and baby foods for shipment to Florida to
help the folks caught in Hurricane Andrew.
As of late, participation in club activities has been down. I
don't know why, though. If there is anything
we are doing wrong, please let us know immediately. If
there is something you'd like to do, by all means let me
know and we'll see what we can do. Remember people
-- this is your club.
I'd like to welcome the Fishers, Erwin Cox, and Christine
Hodgson to the Republic. I hope you enjoy our
activities and I look forward to meeting all of you. I'd
also like to take the time to thank Jeff Kirkland for sending
in stamps for the Stampede. And finally, I'd
like to thank all the people who work so hard for this club. Without
you, none of this would be happening.
Thanks everyone! |
First
Officer's Report
by Cmdr Dawn Williams
|
Nuqneh!
Greetings, crew. I have a few things to update
you on. The first was the MDA telethon on Labor
Day. Gail Fuller of the MacLeod worked hard and
organized over several months to contact the various Trek
groups here in Atlanta to assist with the telethon. Many
people turned out for the event, including members from
Starfleet, IFT, KLAW, and Starfleet Headquarters. The
telethon was successful and they appreciated our participation. We
have been asked to return next year. Good work,
Gail!! Next year, let's try to have a larger
turnout of members for this good cause.
Thanks to all for your participation in this various events
at Vulkon. Shane Shadrix, Jeff Kirkland, Deborah
and Jay Leafey, and Jesse Feldberg (among many others --
you know who you are!) helped staff the Republic's recruiting
table, and Jesse took part in our Klingon skit for the talent
contest ("Shut up, Wesley!"). Capt. Hilliard
drew double duty at the table and as part of con security.
In the last two weekends of October (October 23, 24, 29,
and 30), the Chattahoochee Nature Center is having their
annual Halloween Hikes. This is a non-scary alternative
for kids for Halloween that also educates about native wildlife,
plants, and the environment. They need volunteers
for these evenings. This would include helping
sell tickets, guiding groups, entertaining crowds, etc. If
anyone is interested, please contact me (396-4742).
The Republic has T-shirts and badges for sale. These
shirts were made by a local artist and they look great! We
will be selling these at Vulkon and other events. We
have shirts with the Republic logo and Klingon Embassy shirts. We
are selling them for $13 each. If you would like
to purchase a shirt, contact Capt. Hilliard or me.
This fall, we would like to plan some special events. What
do you want to do? Let us know -- let's plan
something fun. I would like to plan a camping
trip to the mountains. Please let me know if
that sounds good.
