Star
Trek Night with the Atlanta
OutWorlders
8:00 p.m. Friday, November 21, 2008
Hosted by and in the home of Alan Siler
2582 Addison Drive, Doraville GA 30340
|
Let's
join our friends, the Atlanta
OutWorlders, for a night each month that celebrates
the quintessential American science fiction television franchise:
Star Trek. Each month, we'll explore a different theme
by seeing episodes taken from all of the show's TV incarnations:
Star Trek, The Animated Series, The Next Generation,
Deep Space Nine, Voyager and yes... even Enterprise.
Few television shows, particularly sci-fi, have had
the impact on American culture that Star Trek has had.
For the month of November, the theme is "Not
Another Time Travel Episode!"

Put
on your USS Republic chapter sport shirt or t-shirt
and join us in the Georgia Public Broad-casting television
studios to answer phones for their pledge drive, and be
seen on TV!
The mission of Georgia
Public Broadcasting (GPB) is to create, produce
and distribute high quality programs and services that educate,
inform and entertain audiences and enrich the quality of
their lives. GPB's nine public television stations
deliver quality PBS and locally produced programming to
every county in Georgia, and to significant portions of
surrounding states. Since 1984, GPB’s listener-supported,
15-station public radio network has been Georgia's source
for great music and National Public Radio (NPR) news. During
GPB’s television pledge drive, we will answer phones and
take pledges when viewers call to give their support. This
is an excellent opportunity for the Republic to be
seen in the community and promote our chapter while helping
a very worthy cause!
We need between 12 and 24 members to commit to this community
event before Friday, November 21. We should
arrive at the studio no later than 6:45 p.m. for a brief
training, and our shift begins at 7:00 p.m. Dinner
will be provided! Please make plans to join
us for this event and please
RSVP as soon as possible! If you would
like to order a chapter sport shirt or t-shirt, please contact
the Captain.

NEWS
& ANNOUNCEMENTS
USS
Exeter holds third meeting, gets web site, is officially
launched by STARFLEET |
The
USS Republic's shuttle-in-training, the USS Exeter
NCC-1706, based in Jacksonville, Florida, and under the command
of Commander John R. Sims, recently held its third
meeting. Commander Sims submitted the following report:
The crew of the USS Exeter held its third meeting
at the Bowl America in Jacksonville, Florida, on Sunday, September
7, 2008. We thought we'd take a page from our mothership
activities. In attendance were Commander John R.
Sims, Yeoman Hyo Soon Yoo and XO Ryan McDowell,
as well as prospective members Ed and Janice Neu and
their two sons.
We arrived at 6:00 p.m. and held a brief business meeting.
The subjects discussed were our plans for polo shirts,
the upcoming Vulkon and recruitment to our chapter.
After this, we enjoyed a few games of bowling. The scores
were not that great, but the overall fun was! Ed & Janice
Neu's two sons made the night. Watching these two little dynamos
bowl was too cute for words.
We adjourned to some bowling alley food and had a good time
just being together, getting excited about the convention
and eating some pizza and fried corn thingies. Overall,
another successful outing for our new chapter.
Our next meeting will be held on Saturday evening at Vulkon
Orlando at the North Orlando Hilton on October 31 to November
2, 2008. We are hoping to get together with the USS
Paegen and any other ships present at the con.
My crew and I would again like to thank Captain Eric L.
Watts for his support, advice and guidance. He is truly
a great leader that should not be taken for granted.

Exeter
introduces new web site
The Exeter now has its very own web
site. Designed, created and administrated
by the Republic's Capt Eric L. Watts and hosted
on the STARFLEET Region 2 web server, the new web site includes
a summary of the Exeter's brief history, photos of
its crew and detailed reports of all their meetings so far,
with accompanying photos.
Exeter officially
launched by STARFLEET
After (finally) receiving the Exeter's Vessel Registration
Request (VRR) forms, STARFLEET Chief of Shakedown Operations
Rear Admiral Warren Price officially launched the USS
Exeter NCC-1706 on October 28, 2008. The
chapter-in-training has been added to the STARFLEET database
and Region 2 web site. More importantly, Commander
Sims and his five crewmanEnsign Ryan McDowell,
Ensign Chris Hamm, Ensign Hyo Soon Yoo, Ensign
Julie Cain and Ensign JG Jordan Cainhave
been officially transferred off the Republic's crew
roster and onto one of their own, resulting in a 9% decrease
in the Republic's membership.
Commanding Officer, Republic, congratulates Commander
Sims and the crew of the Exeter on their official launching,
and looks forward to continuing to work together towards the
Exeter's official commissioning sometime next year. |
Preregister
now for the 2009 Region 2 Summit for biggest discount |
Hosted
by the USS Haise NCC-74664, the 2009 STARFLEET Region
2 Summit will be held March 6-8 in Jackson, Mississippi. The
annual Summit can be one of the most rewarding experiences
in STARFLEET. Unlike typical conventions with Star
Trek stars, a Summit is a learning experience. Not
only is it a great chance to learn valuable skills in the
various informative panels and workshops, but it's also a
great chance to make valuable friendships with people you've
only heard about through The STARFLEET Communiqué,
Region 2 Update, online and other sources. Over
100 people from chapters throughout the Region attend the
Summit, along with some of the STARFLEET Executive Committee,
like the Commander, STARFLEET. It's a great opportunity
to learn in a very fun environment. You will also have
a chance to find out what is going on in your Region and in
STARFLEET.
One of the most important events at the Summit is the annual
Awards Banquet. The Republic has won five
Regional awards in the last two years and looks forward to
another triumphant year in 2009! Adult registration
for next year's Summit is only $20 until December 1. The
price goes up to $25 after that date and will be $35 after
February 15. Register now to receive the biggest
discount! Additional information about the Summit
in general can be found here
and additional information about the 2009 Summit, including
hotel and restaurant info and PayPal links for preregistration,
Awards Banquet tickets and commemorative t-shirts, can be
found here.
Commanding Officer, Republic, would like for our chapter
to be well-represented at next year's Summit. Please
plan to join this "away mission" and attend this
very important event! |
USS
Republic to be represented at USS Continuum
event |
The
USS Continuumthe STARFLEET chapter in Pensacola,
Floridawill celebrate its 15th anniversary with a dinner
banquet on Saturday, December 6. The USS Republic
will be represented at this gala event by Ensigns Mike
and Connor Sollie, a father and son pair who joined our
chapter at this year's Dragon*Con in September.
Commanding Officer, Republic, congratulates the Continuum
on their anniversary and wishes to thank the Ensigns Sollie
for attending the event on behalf of the Republic. |
Commanding
Officer election is next month |
Captain
Eric L. Watts' first full two-year term as Commanding
Officer of the USS Republic will soon be coming to
a close, and all members in good standing will soon be asked
to cast their vote for the candidate they want to lead and
administrate this chapter for the next two years.
According to Section 04:05 of the STARFLEET Membership
Handbook, "Chapter Chairperson" (page 18, January
2005 edition), "The Chapter Chairperson, also known as
the chapter Commanding Officer (CO), plays an extremely important
role in the day-to-day operations of STARFLEET. The
CO represents STARFLEET to the members of their chapter, and
likewise, through regular reports, represents the opinions
and needs of their members to STARFLEET. A CO of
a shuttle is required to be a graduate of the Officer Training
School (OTS), while the CO of a chapter must be a graduate
of both OTS and the Officer Command College (OCC)." Also,
per Section 04:09, "Both the Commanding Officer and Executive
Officer must be at least 18 years of age."
As of November 2, 2008, there are four members of the Republic
who hold the necessary credentials to hold the office of Commanding
Officer. They are:
Lt JG David Churvis
Captain Matt Ebeling
Commander Brian Holloway
Captain Eric L. Watts
Any officer on the list above who wishes to announce his candidacy
for the position of Commanding Officer should notify
the current CO anytime before the end of November. Any
member of the Republic not listed above who wishes
to run for the office must first take and pass the OTS and
OCC exams administrated by Starfleet Academy. Information
on these exams can be found on the Starfleet
Academy web site.
Captain Watts is willing to serve a second term as the Republic's
CO. If any other eligible person announces his
or her candidacy, paper ballots will be mailed to each member
in good standing in early December. Cast ballots
can then be mailed to the chapter's mailing address or delivered
by hand at the Republic's Christmas Party on December
21. Ballots will be counted by three noncandidate
members and the election results announced during the evening. The
new Commanding Officer, if any, will officially assume office
on January 1. |
Member
Benefits Program seeks additional partners |
The
USS Republic's Member
Benefits Program has been a very successful recruitment
incentive and has helped our members save money on goods and
services provided by our partners. Unfortunately,
due to the recent downturn in the economy and other factors,
a couple of our original partners have gone out of business
in the last few months, reducing the overall value of the
program. The Republic would now like to
strengthen this program by adding several new partners to
it. Partners receive free advertising on our web
site, in our chapter flyers and brochures, and links to their
web sites in The Republiqué
in exchange for an exclusive money-saving offer to Republic
members. If you or someone you know is a business
owner or manager authorized to make such agreements and would
like to become involved in this program, please contact
the Captain for additional details. |

ABOUT
THE REPUBLIC
|
Commissioned
on May 14, 1988 at Dixie-Trek, the USS Republic
NCC-1371 is a chapter of STARFLEET International (SFI)
and a member of STARFLEET Region 2. The Republic
currently has 61 active members (as of November
2) and is one of the largest chapters of STARFLEET in
the world. The Republic plans and coordinates
an active schedule of events for its members, frequently
partnering with other local science fiction groups in
the Atlanta area for joint activities, but does not hold
meetings on a consistently fixed date each month.
Membership in the Republic includes membership
in STARFLEET International. Annual dues are $25
per person for both groups (family discounts are available
with certain conditions and restrictions). Membership
in the Republic includes a subscription to our
award-winning quarterly magazine, The Sovereign Star,
access to our YahooGroups message board, voting privileges
in chapter elections and a personalized laminated membership
card which entitles the member to discounts and rebates
on products and services offered by our Member Benefits
Program partners. Additional information on Republic
membership and how to join is on our award-winning web
site.

YEARS AGO ABOARD THE USS REPUBLIC
From the Center Seat
by Fleet Captain
Jeff Kirkland
|
Open
Hailing Frequencies...
A lof of things have happened since our last newsletter
went out. First, we had a good time in Little
Five Points with the Klingons' Day of Honor. There
were promotions given to the Klingons and to three members
of the MacLeod. The XO of the MacLeod, Leon Lord,
was also promoted to captain. Yours truly was
promoted to Fleet Captain.
Now for things coming up. On May 9, the USS Republic
Tenth Anniversary Banquet will be held at Mike and Kelly's
condo complex. On May 16, at the Express Lanes
on Piedmont Road just off I-85, is the Bowl-A-Thon for Children's
Miracle Network at 12:00. To bowl is $10 minimum,
but we want more. On May 22-24 is Vulkon with Neelix
and other guests.
Now for a bit of sad news. Due to my new job,
I cannot make our meetings or a lot of our events, which
makes me feel that I am not able to do a good job. So
with this article, I am stepping down as the Commanding
Officer. I hope you can give the new CO as much
help as you can. This does not mean that I am
leaving the ship, because I am not. I will be as active
as I can without jeopardizing my job. Thanks
for a good drive. You have been a great crew.
Close frequencies.... |
From
the Right Seat
by Commander
Tonya Spanks
|
Greeting
Republic Crew!
First I'd like to welcome all new crew members. This
is an active ship and we hope that you can join us on our
trips. We are planning trips to the CARTER CENTER,
CYCLORAMA, AND THE ZOO. We are also planning
our annual trips to STONE MOUNTAIN--bring lots of food,
water, and your best water gun. We play all day. And
then there is my personal favorite... WHITE WATER. Last
year we were joined by members of the MacLeod and KAG. We
had a lovely picnic in the parking lot under a nice shade
tree. Most of our activities are events in which
families can participate so if your significant other and/or
children don't mind strange but loveable (I speak only for
myself) people they are welcome.
We (STARFLEET) are working with KAG on a BOWL*A*THON to
help raise money for CHILDREN'S MIRACLE NETWORK set for
May 16th. This is a regular meeting/activity
day for us. The bowling alley is EXPRESS LANES
which is located on Monroe Boulevard just off the I-85 north
exit just a block up on the right headed towards Piedmont
Road. All are welcome to bowl. I haven't
bowled since 7th grade so this should be fun. There
is a minimum donation of $10 with bowling shoes included. If
you have a costume or uniform please feel free to wear it. This
makes for more fun.
Attendance at meetings has improved somewhat with the joining
of Robert and John, two Coweta residents. They
have made nearly every meeting since joining. I
don't fault someone for not attending meetings because they
have to work. I work every other Saturday and
can't attend all, but if you're not coming because you simply
don't feel like it then what's the point of joining a fan
club if you are not going to put your dues to good use. I
will be making more of an effort to keep people informed
of meetings and such but it also helps for you to keep in
touch with me and your caption. Jeff's phone
number is (770) 253-6474. My phone number is
(770) 808-5910 and my E-mail address is RE13711@aol.com. See
ya soon!!
On March 21st the Republic, MacLeod, and KAG met at LITTLE
5 POINTS at FILINNI'S Pizzeria for Klingon Honor Day. There
Klingons received promotions as well as Members of the MacLeod
and our own Captain received a well deserved promotion to
FLEET CAPTAIN (hip hip hooray!!!). Robert and
John arrived just as the festivities were coming to an end
and missed our location but caught up with us at Mike and
Kelly's place where the party continued with SOUTH PARK,
SCATTAGORIES, and a computer lesson or two (thanks, Kelly).
The MacLeod will be going to the Georgia Renaissance festival
on April 18th and I will be joining them. All
fun loving people are welcome to join (no uniforms please).
In closing, I will mention the ship's 10th anniversary party
is set for May 9th and there is a VULCON scheduled for May. Call
Mike Henigan for more details on both. His number
is (404) 688-2882. |
