Atlanta Volunteer Staff Recruitment Meeting
2:00
p.m. Saturday, November 20, 2010
Holiday Inn Atlanta Perimeter
4386 Chamblee-Dunwoody Road, Atlanta GA 30341 |
|
TrekTrax
Atlanta will be the first exclusive, Star Trek-only
convention held in Atlanta in 18 years, and we need a team
of dedicated volunteers to help make it happen. Although
TXA is presented by the USS Republic, you do not have
to be a member of the Republic to volunteer.
The very first TXA
volunteer staff recruitment meeting will be held at 2:00 p.m.
on Saturday, November 20, at our host hotel, the Holiday Inn
Atlanta Perimeter at 4386 Chamblee-Dunwoody Road. Anyone
who is interested in serving on staff as a volunteer, whether
or not you are a member of the Republic, should plan
to attend this meeting.
The TrekTrax Atlanta executive committee is still evaluating
and determining our specific staffing needs. Our
needs as of press time include the Star Trek, Klingon
and Costuming & Makeup programming tracks; gaming and
video rooms; registration, con operations, guest relations,
photography & videography and security. Con
suite and technical operations departments are already filled. Additional
departments (if any), the specific number of persons needed
for each department and the number of duty hours required
from each volunteer will be announced at the November 20 meeting.
All persons interested in applying for a volunteer staff position
are asked to bring a written summary of your previous convention-running
experience. Candidates will be asked to pay a $10
staff registration fee to cover a few basic con expenses;
checks should be made payable to "TrekTrax Atlanta"
(cash also accepted).
The meeting will include a general overview of the convention
and is open to anyone and everyone who is interested in and
plans to attend the convention. Payments for regular
preregistered memberships will be accepted and you can also
make your hotel reservation while you're there. We hope to
see you there!

TrekTrax
Atlanta confirms three guests from Starship Farragut |
TrekTrax
Atlanta is pleased to announce that the actors who
play the three leading characters in Starship
Farragut have all been confirmed as convention
guests.
John Broughton, who created the series, stars as Captain
John T. Carter. Michael Bednar plays First
Officer Robert Tacket and supplies the series with all of
their props. Holly Bednar plays Lt.
Commander Michelle Smithfield and has co-written a vignette
for the production.
TrekTrax Atlanta looks forward to welcoming the lead cast
to Atlanta and will be screening all of Starship Farragut's
episodes in our Video Room throughout the weekend. |
Commanding
Officer election to be held next month |
Captain
Eric L. Watts' second two-year term as Commanding Officer
of the USS Republic will soon be coming to a close,
and all members in good standing will soon be asked to cast
their vote for the candidate they want to lead and administrate
this chapter for the next two years.
Candidates
for the position must be a member in good standing of STARFLEET
International, must have taken and passed Officers Training
School (OTS) and Officers Command College (OCC), and must
be at least 18 years of age. Members interested
in taking OTS and OCC should visit the STARFLEET Academy web
site. In accordance with the Republic's
Rank
Assignment & Promotions Policy, members who take and
pass both courses receive an automatic promotion to Lieutenant,
Junior Grade (Lt. JG).
As of November 14, there are still only four members of the
Republic who hold the necessary credentials to hold
the office of Commanding Officer. They are:
Lt
JG David Churvis |
Commander
Brian Holloway |
Captain
Matt Ebeling |
Captain
Eric L. Watts |
Captain Watts is willing to serve a third term as the Republic's
CO. If any other eligible person wishes to announce
his or her candidacy, he or she must do so by Friday, November
26, so that paper ballots can be mailed to each member
in good standing by the end of the month. Cast
ballots can then be mailed to the chapter's mailing address
or delivered by hand at the Republic's Christmas Party
in December. Ballots will be counted by three noncandidate
members and the results announced during the evening. The
new Commanding Officer, if any, will officially assume office
on January 1, 2011. |
STARFLEET
vs. Chapter dues |
When
you remit your annual membership dues payment of $25.00 to
the Republic, $15.00 is forwarded to STARFLEET and
the Republic keeps the remainder. If you
receive a dues renewal notice from STARFLEET and pay $15.00
directly to them, please remember that you still owe the
Republic an additional $10.00 for chapter dues. To
make recordkeeping as simple as possible, Republic
command prefers that members submit a single payment of $25.00
to the chapter. Your STARFLEET dues will be paid
on your behalf. Dues can be paid quickly and easily
on the Republic's web
site. Thank you! |

ABOUT
THE REPUBLIC
|
Commissioned
on May 14, 1988, at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta,
Georgia, the USS Republic NCC-1371 is a chapter
of STARFLEET International and a member of STARFLEET Region
2. The Republic currently has 57
active members (as of November 14) and is the largest
chapter of STARFLEET in Region 2.
The Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule
of events for its members, frequently partnering with
other local science fiction groups in the Atlanta area
for joint activities, but does not hold meetings on a
consistently fixed date each month.
Membership in the Republic includes membership
in STARFLEET International. Annual dues are $25
per person for both groups (family discounts are available
with certain conditions and restrictions). Membership
in the Republic includes access to our YahooGroups
message board, voting privileges in chapter elections
and a personalized laminated membership card which entitles
the member to discounts and rebates on products and services
offered by our Member Benefits Program partners. Additional
information on Republic membership and how to join
is on our award-winning web site.

Star
Trek Sequel Script Still Planned for Early 2011 Completion
– Not “Almost Finished” |
by
Anthony Pascale
November 12, 2010
|
Today
there are a number of reports on the web stating the script
for the Star Trek sequel is "almost complete." TrekMovie
has done some fact-checking and while work is currently
underway by writing the team, it appears they are still
targeting early 2011 for their hand-in. |
Scripting still underway for early 2011 preproduction
start Yesterday, TrekMovie reported on comments about
the Star Trek sequel made during Viacom’s Q3 earnings
report and call with investors. This call was also
reported on by The Hollywood Reporter, who added
a note that "Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof
are hammering out the script as we speak. They’re
supposed to deliver it by the holidays. J. J. Abrams,
who is producing, hasn’t committed to climbing back into
the director’s chair, but the studio definitely wants him."
This bit of detail has been picked up by a number
of other sites and sourced to the Viacom call, but it was
not actually part of the Viacom call, but added by THR.
|
It is true, as TrekMovie has been reporting, that J. J.
Abrams has not yet committed to directing the Star Trek
sequel, but this is due to the script not yet being completed.
As with his first Trek, Abrams will not make
the call until the script is completed. As for when
the script will be done it appears that THR is still
working off of an old estimate. TrekMovie reported
last month that the script is expected to be completed in
early 2011, and sources indicate this is still the plan.
Scripting has only been underway for about a month,
and just last week J. J. Abrams was on the record saying
that the script was just "being sort of fully outlined."
|
Filming for the Star Trek sequel (due in theaters
June 29, 2012) is expected to start in the summer of 2011,
so there is still plenty of time for the script. Preproduction
on the film should not take as long as the 2009 Star
Trek feature as most of the main casting is already
done, and much of the design and construction has already
been completed, leaving the team to focus on the new elements.
|
Of course, any bit of news regarding Star Trek quickly
sweeps around the web, so all these reports are understandable.
We are all hungry for anything new. The next 19 months
will be full of lots of reports, rumors, speculation, facts
and more all about the next Star Trek movie, and
we here at TrekMovie will do our best to bring it all to
you as accurately as possible. |
