The
USS Republic's 2010 Christmas Party & Awards
Ceremony in the home of ENS1 Mark A. Ozanick
|
Please
plan to attend the very first joint holiday party co-hosted
by the USS Republic and our sister ship across town,
the USS Atlanta! Hosted by longtime STARFLEET
friends Capt. Bernadette Ackley and her brother CRR
Brian Ackley, this joint event will be a potluck
dinner and will include the Republic's annual Awards
Ceremony, when we announce the recipient of this year's
prestigious Member of the Year Award. USS Republic
Commanding Officer Capt Eric L. Watts will also deliver
a brief but important "State of the Chapter" address
to announce the chapter's new year-long course and goal
for 2012: The Year of the Phoenix.
The
Ackleys' basement is "all sci-fi, with all sorts of
stuff to keep Star Trek, X-Files, Star
Wars, etc. fans happy to look at and have fun."
They also have a large screen TV, Blu-ray player and
a large movie collection with lots of space to play games
and have a great time. It will be an exciting evening
of fun, festivity and friendship, and Captain Watts and
USS Atlanta Commanding Officer Adm Mike Henigan
both hope you will plan to come
eat, drink and be merry with your fellow Star Trek
fans from all around the metro Atlanta area!

& ANNOUNCEMENTS
USS
Republic announces one-time chapter membership dues
waiver |
When
the USS Republic was decommissioned by STARFLEET
International in November 2010, we suspended our award-winning
membership recruitment campaigns (winning Region 2's Recruiter
Awards every year from 2006 to 2009) and made only routine
membership renewal efforts. During that time,
our membership roster decreased dramatically (although we
are still, with 36 members, the largest chapter in Region
2). Now that the Republic is once again
a duly commissioned chapter of STARFLEET (since October
2011), we want to rebuild our membership roster and reclaim
our former title as the largest chapter in all of STARFLEET. To
that end, and as part of our year-long Year
of the Phoenix campaign, the USS Republic
is pleased to announce that, for the rest of December and
for all of January, any and all members of the Republic,
whether their STARFLEET dues have expired or not, can renew
or extend their STARFLEET membership for only $15, with
a one-time waiver of their $10 annual chapter dues.
If your STARFLEET dues have expired (or even if they haven't),
please consider renewing or extending your membership by
remitting $15 to the Republic, either by PayPal or
by postal mail. If you're not sure if your dues
have expired, check the Crew Roster in the sidebar. If
your name is not on it, your dues are expired! To
use PayPal, send your payment to ussrepublic@aol.com. Alternately,
send your check or money order, payable to "USS Republic,"
to 2902 Aspen Woods Entry, Atlanta GA 30360-2759. This
one-time chapter membership dues waiver offer expires January
31. Of course, we would still be happy to accept
payment for your chapter dues, if you're so inclined. Thank
you for your support! USS Republic: Boldly
Going, Boldly Doing!

ABOUT
THE REPUBLIC
|
The
USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned
as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988,
at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia. As
of December 11, 2011, the Republic crew includes 36
members who are active members of STARFLEET in good
standing.
The Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule
of events for its members, frequently partnering with
other local science fiction groups in the Atlanta area
for joint activities, but does not hold meetings on a
consistently fixed date each month.
Because the USS Republic is a duly commissioned
chapter of STARFLEET International and is bound and governed
by its Constitution and By-Laws, membership in STARFLEET
is a prerequisite for membership in the Republic. Combined
annual dues for both groups are $25 per person and is
collected by the chapter (family discounts are available
with certain conditions and restrictions). Membership
in the Republic includes access to our YahooGroups
message board, voting privileges in chapter elections
and a personalized laminated membership card which entitles
the member to discounts and rebates on products and services
offered by our Member Benefits Program Partners. Additional
information on Republic membership and how to join
and reenlist is on our award-winning web site.

Edgar
Ramirez "Front Runner" to Be Star Trek
Sequel Villain |
By
Anthony Pascale
December 7, 2011
|
With Benicio Del Toro out of the running for the part of
the villain in the Star Trek sequel, director J.
J. Abrams and team have been back on the hunt for a new
bad guy. Now a report says that two actors are in
the running, with Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez as the
leading contender. |
Venezuelan
actor Edgar Ramirez front-runner for Star Trek villain |
The
latest Star Trek sequel villain casting news comes
from Variety, with sources saying that Venezuelan
actor Edgar Ramirez is the "front-runner," with
Jordi Molla (Columbiana)" also in the mix. Both
actors are expected to test for the role over the next two
days and director J. J. Abrams is reported to be interested
in making a decision before the end of the week. It
is noted that there may be some issue regarding scheduling
with Ramirez; however, Variety sources say "Abrams
wouldn't consider any actor if they were unavailable." |
Regarding
Ramirez, Variety notes the actor has been "pursued
by the studios since his breakout turn as infamous terrorist
Carlos the Jackal in Olivier Assayas' miniseries Carlos."
The 34-year-old actor has also appeared in Domino,
The Bourne Ultimatum and Vantage Point, and
will soon be seen as Ares in Wrath of the Titans.
|
Over
the last week, there have been a couple of unconfirmed reports
that the villain role for the Star Trek sequel will
be Khan. Variety has no more details, but does point
out the obvious with regards to the actors being considered
for the role: |
The
next question to be asked is what character Ramirez will
play in the film if he gets the part. It was reported
last week---before it was known del Toro was out---that
the villain may be Khan, but Abrams and Paramount denied
it. Whether that denial was aimed at the role or just
del Toro's involvement wasn't quite clear. But it
should be noted that Abrams was still in need of an actor
of Latin descent, the same ethnicity of Ricardo Montalban,
who played Khan in the original series and Star Trek
II: The Wrath of Khan." |
Production
on the Star Trek sequel is still slated to start
in mid-January, which explains why Abrams is anxious to
nail down his villain. |
