130th Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade
A JOINT CHAPTER EVENT WITH THE USS ATLANTA AND MEMBERS OF KAG

Saturday, March 17, 2012
Line-up begins at 10:00 a.m.; step-off is at 12:00 p.m.
Peachtree Street at Ralph McGill Boulevard
Atlanta GA  30308
Republic and IKAV Nemesis members last marched together in the 2010 Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade.

For the third year since 2009, the USS Republic will march in Atlanta's St. Patrick's Parade.  Always held on Saturday, this year's parade will actually be held on the traditional date of St. Patrick's Day, March 17.  This year, we'll be joined by members of both the USS Atlanta and members of the Klingon Assault Group behind our awesome parade banner in a strong showing of Star Trek solidarity!  PLEASE PLAN TO JOIN US!

LINE-UP INFORMATION
The USS Republic is #25 out of 38 groups to line up on Peachtree Street between Pine Street and Ralph McGill Boulevard.  (The Georgia 501st Stormtroopers are #10!)  Other groups will be lining up on West Peachtree Street and Ralph McGill.  Our line-up time and place is 10:45 a.m. in the left-hand curb lane (see map, below; click to enlarge).

MARTA is highly recommended.  Take MARTA to the Civic Center Station on West Peachtree Street.  When exiting the station, our line-up area is one block to the east (see map, below; click to enlarge).

2012 will be the largest, best-attended St. Patrick's Parade & Festival since the first Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade held 154 years ago, in 1858.  The parade begins at 12:00 noon, runs 1.1 miles starting from Peachtree Street and Ralph McGill Boulevard, proceeding down Peachtree past Woodruff Park, then left on Decatur Street to Pryor Street and right on Pryor through Underground Atlanta and the huge Underground Atlanta Festival where there will be free entertainment and vendors.  For a map of the entire parade route, please click here.

The 2012 Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade will have over 200 units, including clowns, floats, bands of every kind, military units, bagpipe and drum corps, thousands of children, Irish dancers, clowns, high-tech firefighting equipment, police units, drill teams, dogs, horses, antique cars, dignitaries from Ireland and our own government leaders.  Join us for a great day and for a grand time as we celebrate Atlanta and her Irish Heritage in 2012.

Please contact the Captain as soon as possible if you're planning to join us so we can have a reasonably accurate idea of how many to expect.  This is a costume-encouraged event, so please plan to wear your Republic chapter sport shirt, chapter t-shirt or your best Star Trek costume.  If you don't care to march with us, consider coming out with your camera and cheering for us as we go by!

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

TrekTrax Atlanta announces KLI founder Dr. Lawrence M. Schoen
The USS Republic is pleased to announce that Klingon language expert and Klingon Language Institute founder Dr. Lawrence M. Schoen has been confirmed as a guest for TrekTrax Atlanta.

Schoen holds a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics and is one of the world's foremost authorities on the Klingon language,  In 1992, Dr. Schoen's interests in science fiction and language found common ground and he established, and began his tenure as director of, the Klingon Language Institute, an organization dedicated to the study of the world's most popular fictional language.  This included an ongoing career of lectures at conventions and museums across three continents, and the development of a loose affiliation of language scholars and amateurs throughout fifty countries.

At TrekTrax Atlanta, Dr. Schoen will host two different presentations: one about his work in Star Trek fandom in general and Klingon fandom in particular, and the other will be an actual Klingon language workshop.  In addition, Dr. Schoen will be seated on several other discussion panels as an expert in all things Klingon.

Don't miss TrekTrax Atlanta.  Adult memberships are currently only $45 with a $5.00 discount available to members of STARFLEET International and the Klingon Assault Group.  Pre-reg TODAY.  When you purchase your membership, you can also purchase your VIP Champagne Reception ticket (available only in advance; not available at the door) and your souvenir convention t-shirt, and make your hotel room reservation.  Visit the TrekTrax Atlanta web site to learn more about the convention and everything we've got planned for this extraordinary Star Trek fan experience.

Valid STARFLEET and KAG memberships will be verified prior to processing payments.  One discount per person.  See respective web pages for additional details.
TrekTrax Atlanta MUST have your support NOW!  Please read this.
As of this writing, we are now just over six weeks away from the kick-off of TrekTrax Atlanta and we are in critical need of your support.

There are three categories of persons who will be attending the convention: Guests, Staff and Members.  There is something that each category of attendee can do to help.

Guests:  "Guests" are all those folks listed on the home page of our web site with their name and photo.  You are vital to the success of TrekTrax Atlanta and each of you most likely has a web site or a blog site or a Facebook page or some other means of helping us advertise and promote TrekTrax Atlanta.  We have been heavily promoting your appearance at our convention; we now need you to heavily promote your appearance at our convention as well.  Use whatever images, web links or other information on our web site freely and liberally on yours.  "Like" our Facebook page and "Share" our daily announcements on yours.  We need your support.

Staff:  "Staff" are our volunteers who help run the convention both in the planning and development stages as well as at the convention itself.  Volunteers are asked to pay a nominal $10 staff badge fee.  We have critically important needs in virtually all departments, including all four programming tracks, registration, convention operations, technical operations, guest services, photography and videography, security, gaming, video room and con suite.  If you want to attend the convention but the $45 price tag is a hardship, consider volunteering for one or more of these departments.  Visit our Volunteers web page for staff policies and contact information for our department heads or contact the Chairman.  In the meantime, "Like" our Facebook page and "Share" our daily announcements on yours.  We need your support.

Members:  "Members," of course, are all those folks who purchase an attending membership.  What we need from you right now is to purchase your membership.  Please don't wait any longer. ChattaCon, Con Nooga and AnachroCon are now behind us and TrekTrax Atlanta is dead ahead.  The TXA executive committee is now at the point where we need to make several critically important purchases and payments (airline tickets, celebrity appearance fees, hotel deposits, program books, t-shirts, etc.) and other decisions based on expected attendance (quantities of program books, t-shirts, audio/visual equipment rentals, etc.).  Almost all of these purchases and decisions must be made within the next two weeks and they will all be made based on the number of preregistered memberships that have been sold.  If that number falls below our expectations (and right now, it does), the TXA executive committee will have to make some tough decisions on what, or who, to cut from the convention in order to make it a financially viable event.

The TrekTrax Atlanta executive committee is committed to producing the best Star Trek fan experience possible.  But at the end of the day, it's YOU who make it possible. "Like" our Facebook page and "Share" our daily announcements on yours, and PLEASE!  Buy your membership today!

ABOUT THE REPUBLIC
The USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988, at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia.  As of March 4, 2012, the Republic crew includes 36 members who are active members of STARFLEET in good standing.
The Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule of events for its members, frequently partnering with other local science fiction groups in the Atlanta area for joint activities, but does not hold meetings on a consistently fixed date each month.
Because the USS Republic is a duly commissioned chapter of STARFLEET International and is bound and governed by its Constitution and By-Laws, membership in STARFLEET is a prerequisite for membership in the Republic.  Combined annual dues for both groups are $25 per person and is collected by the chapter (family discounts are available with certain conditions and restrictions).  Membership in the Republic includes access to our YahooGroups message board, voting privileges in chapter elections and a personalized laminated membership card which entitles the member to discounts and rebates on products and services offered by our Member Benefits Program Partners.  Additional information on Republic membership and how to join and reenlist is on our award-winning web site.

Star Trek Set Photos Show Benedict Cumberbatch Battling Spock
By Josh Wigler
February 24, 2012
Star Trek 2 is shrouded in secrecy.  We don't have an official title, we don't know the plot, and we don't know who Benedict Cumberbatch is playing---though all signs point to a villain, especially in light of a new set photo that's just arrived at our door step.
In this first look at director J. J. Abrams' currently shooting Star Trek sequel, we see quite clearly that Zachary Quinto's returning Spock and the newcomer played by Cumberbatch are very much not friends.  The two are locked in battle on top of what's being described as "a Space Barge set."
During the battle and in the photo you can see here, Spock does his best to stop his foe using his famous Vulcan Death Grip [sic], but the move fails; Cumberbatch's character is able to overpower the grip and regain the upper hand in his struggle against the Starfleet officer.
Interestingly, Spock is not the only one wearing a Starfleet uniform. Cumberbatch's unknown character is seen wearing a black version of the uniform under his silver overcoat.  A sign that this man was a friend before he was a foe?

In another shot from the epic battle, Zoe Saldana joins the fight once again as Uhura.  She's using a phaser to save Spock from Cumberbatch's villain, though whether or not she'll be successful is a completely different story altogether.

Star Trek: Phase II to Produce Lost Norman Spinrad Script
By Anthony Pascale
February 24, 2012
In 1967, immediately after work finished on the original series episode "The Doomsday Machine," Star Trek creator/producer Gene Roddenberry asked writer Norman Spinrad to follow it up with another script.  This time, the parameters were to include a role for "Mr. Television" Milton Berle.  Spinrad turned around a script titled "He Walked Among Us," but then came into conflict with producer Gene Coon.  After Coon rewrote the script, Spinrad felt it didn't work anymore and convinced Roddenberry to pull it from the production schedule.  Now, 45 years later, Spinrad has rediscovered his long lost original draft and this week he made it available as an ebook download.
Yesterday, Spinrad was contacted by Star Trek: Phase II star / producer James Cawley and the two agreed to put the show back into production.  Spinrad tells TrekMovie that Cawley also offered him the opportunity to direct the episode, which he accepted.  This will be Spinrad's first time at the helm, but he has experience working on film and television and has always wanted to direct. Spinrad tells TrekMovie the plan is to shoot "He Walked Among Us" in September.  For now, Cawley and Spinrad haven't started to talk about who they can cast to play the role originally intended for Milton Berle.  TrekMovie suggests Jason Alexander.  He's a good actor for both drama and comedy, and of course a huge Trekkie (who even appeared in an episode of Voyager).

Cumberbatch "Privileged" to Be on Star Trek Sequel + Talks Working with Pine & Quinto
By TrekMovie.com Staff
February 28, 2012
Benedict Cumberbatch talked to MTV about shooting the Star Trek sequel while attending Elton John's Oscar party on Sunday.  The actor responded to Chris Pine's recent compliment about how he stood out due to his training, saying that he actually only had a year of training.  Benedict also said he is learning a lot from his cast mates, noting he has been working especially closely with Quinto:
I think they are brilliant on that show, and it's a real privilege to be on that set.  There's a patter and a kind of knowledge of who they're playing and the other main characters, which I'm learning a lot from.  It's just good fun.  It's great to work with Chris.  He's very professional.  So is Zach [Quinto], who I've been working a lot with this week; I adore him, he's a brilliant, brilliant guy.
The Batch (trying out a new nickname for him) said that his work is now starting on the Star Trek project, which began filming January 12.  He also talked about what it is like jumping into a sequel where everyone knows each other, saying:
It's a great thing to come into something that everybody's familiar with and knows each other very well. So it's [in] a weird way a very easy thing to get up to speed with, because everybody is so welcoming and gets along with one another.

Quinto: Star Trek Sequel Still Being Defined + Saldana Talks Exhausting Schedule
By TrekMovie.com Staff
February 29, 2012
Speaking to E at the Academy Awards on Sunday, Star Trek's Zachary Quinto once again talked about how the sequel currently in production is evolving, saying:
What you guys are going to see has yet to be solidified, decided [and] defined and that's the great part about working with someone who is so mind-bogglingly talented as J. J. Abrams.
Quinto also noted that the shooting schedule has been "overwhelming," but he noted that he loves to "work hard."  And Quinto's Star Trek co-star Zoe Saldana also talked to E over the weekend, and she, too, weighed in on the schedule, saying:
I'm like happy exhausted.  I'm literally going to bed with the biggest smile... I feel like I'm home.
