The USS Republic's Sixth (?) Annual Halloween Spooktacular

HOST NEEDED!
Saturday, October 27, 2012
Ens Brad Carrne, Ens Tom Dempsey, Capt Michael Cowart, CO Capt Eric L. Watts, Ens Eve Gidion and ENS3 Eddie Hines at the USS Republic's last Halloween "Spooktacular" held way back in 2010.
The USS Republic would like to hold its sixth annual Halloween Spooktacular on Saturday evening, October 27, but needs someone to volunteer to host the event.  If you or someone you know would be willing to host this event, please contact the Captain as soon as possible.  Alternately, if you are a member of another local sci-fi fan group that is already planning a Halloween party on that date and that group might be interested in hosting a joint party, please contact the Captain as soon as possible.

After five consecutive Halloween parties from 2006 to 2010, the USS
Republic did not celebrate this festive occasion in 2011 because no one stepped up and volunteered to host the event.  Please don't let that happen to us again!  Please contact the Captain if you can host.

Either way, save the date, get your spookiest costumes ready and stay tuned to
The Republiqué for details on where our sixth annual Spooktacular will (hopefully) be!
NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

TrekTrax Atlanta announces additional guests for 2013
The USS Republic is pleased to announce that several additional guests have been confirmed for TrekTrax Atlanta 2013, our annual Star Trek convention to be held next April.

From the Star Trek fan film series Project: Potemkin, cast members Randall Landers, Bill MacKenzie and Sara Higgins MacKenzie will be joining previously announced castmates Renda Carr and Tim Carr.  As part of their presence at TrekTrax Atlanta, members of the cast and crew will be filming the vignette "Closing Time" late Saturday night, with a very special guest star as the Klingon bartender Korgoth.  Extras in Wrath of Khan-era Starfleet uniforms as well as a variety of aliens (Klingons, Gorn, etc.) will be needed!

Also joining TrekTrax Atlanta as guests will be one or more members from the Star Trek fan productions Star Trek: Chains of Betrayal (a 40-minute live action film) and Star Trek: Valkyrie (an audio series).  Although no one from Star Trek: Intrepid (filmed and produced in Scotland) will be able to attend in person, they're sending copies of all their episodes to us for inclusion in our 24-hour video programming which, in case you missed it, will be carried on one of the hotel's in-house TV channels!

Representatives from several other Star Trek fan productions are currently determining their ability to attend and confirmations will be announced here and on the TXA web site as they are made.  We have also been in negotations since July---yes, July---with our potential celebrity guests for 2013 and we very much hope to be making that major announcement very soon.

Your financial support and preregistered memberships are critically important to the success of TrekTrax Atlanta.  Please attend our upcoming fundraiser (details above), buy merchandise from our web site and purchase your membership as soon as possible.  Thank you!

Commanding Officer election coming in November
Captain Eric L. Watts' third two-year term as Commanding Officer of the USS Republic will soon be coming to a close, and all members in good standing will soon be asked to cast their vote for the candidate they want to lead and administrate this chapter for the next two years.

Candidates for the position must be a member in good standing of STARFLEET International, must have taken and passed Officers Training School (OTS) and Officers Command College (OCC), and must be at least 18 years of age.  Members interested in taking OTS and/or OCC should visit the STARFLEET Academy web site.  In accordance with the Republic's Rank Assignment & Promotions Policy, members who take and pass both courses receive an automatic promotion to Lieutenant, Junior Grade (Lt. JG).

As of September 23, there are three members of the Republic in good standing who hold the necessary credentials to hold the office of Commanding Officer.  In alphabetical order, they are:

  Commander David Churvis
  Captain Matt Ebeling
  Captain Eric L. Watts

No currently eligible member has, so far, announced his candidacy.  At least one member of the Republic who holds the necessary credentials must renew his dues before becoming eligible to announce, vote or be voted for; at least eight members of the Republic currently hold an OTS diploma but need an OCC diploma to be eligible for CO.

If more than one eligible person announces his or her candidacy, paper ballots will be mailed to each member in good standing in November.  Cast ballots can then be mailed to the chapter's mailing address or delivered by hand at the Republic's Christmas Party in December.  Ballots will be counted by three noncandidate members and the results announced during the evening.  The new Commanding Officer, if any, will officially assume office on January 1, 2013.

ABOUT THE REPUBLIC
The USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988, at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia.  As of September 23, 2012, the Republic crew includes 38 members who are active members of STARFLEET in good standing.
The Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule of events for its members, frequently partnering with other local science fiction groups in the Atlanta area for joint activities, but does not hold meetings on a consistently fixed date each month.
Because the USS Republic is a duly commissioned chapter of STARFLEET International and is bound and governed by its Constitution and By-Laws, membership in STARFLEET is a prerequisite for membership in the Republic.  Combined annual dues for both groups are $25 per person and is collected by the chapter (family discounts are available with certain conditions and restrictions).  Membership in the Republic includes access to our YahooGroups message board, voting privileges in chapter elections and a personalized laminated membership card which entitles the member to discounts and rebates on products and services offered by our Member Benefits Program Partners.  Additional information on Republic membership and how to join and reenlist is on our award-winning web site.

NEWS from
Star Trek Crew Turns Out to Celebrate Walter Koenig's Hollywood Star
By Albert L. Ortega
September 11, 2012
Actor, writer, television icon Walter Koenig was honored September 10 with the 2,479th Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  The actor was the first to play Pavel Chekov and the last remaining cast member from the original Star Trek series to be honored with a Star.
On hand at the ceremony were Koenig's Star Trek costars George Takei (Sulu), Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) and Leonard Nimoy (Spock).  Nimoy was one of the speakers at the event, praising Walter's great talent and memorable role on television and the delight he had making Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, particularly directing him in uttering the words "nuclear wessels." Specifically on the role of Chekov, Nimoy paid Walter the following compliment:
I remember when Walter came on board the Enterprise, there were people that had reasons for bringing this character on board.  At the time, our major adversaries were the Russians and it was decided for the sake of showing a positive aspect of the future it would be a good thing to have a Russian on board.  Also at the same time, the Beatles were a big deal and they had these interesting hair cuts and someone said, "Maybe we will pick up a bit of the Beatles audience... we should put a Beatle wig on him." So Walter came in with his excellent Russian accent and a Beatle wig and something interesting happened.  It turned out that Walter was a good actor and he took these slim dimensions of a character that had been handed to him and he created a three-dimensional flesh-and-blood person who made an enormous contribution to Star Trek over the years.
J. Michael Straczynski also spoke about his and Walter's days on Babylon 5 and how he created the role of baddie Bester the PsiCop. An unintended funny highlight from the event was when Walk of Fame CEO Leron Gubler presented Walter with a proclamation from the City of Los Angeles (for "Walter Koenig Day") only to have his name misspelled.
After Walter's Star was unveiled, he called for silence to mention that Rod Roddenberry had given a substantial amount of money to help raise the funds needed to procure the Star, with Rod at his side.
Other luminaries present were Star Trek: Voyager's Tim Russ and Garrett Wang, Deep Space Nine’s favorite Dabo Girl Chase Masterson and original Battlestar Galactica Boomer Herb Jefferson.  His wife Judy Levitt and daughter Danielle were also at the ceremony.

Sequel Title Confirmed: Star Trek Into Darkness
By Anthony Pascale
September 7, 2012
Star Trek Into Darkness has been selected as the title for the 2013 sequel to J. J. Abrams' Star Trek movie.  This is a title that comes out of a long process of discussion amongst the creative team.  As reported earlier, Paramount tested a number of titles for the film over the summer, including at least one title that did not include "Star Trek."  The title (by design) does not include a colon, like were used for the past franchise films such as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek: First Contact, etc.
As for the title itself, Into Darkness does not reveal anything specific about the plot, so for those who were hoping for Star Trek: Khan or The Revenge of Gary Mitchell, you are out of luck.  However, Into Darkness certainly gives us a hint that this film could have a serious tone and perhaps darker theme than the 2009 Star Trek film.  On the other hand, the title is also evocative of Star Trek's core mission of going into the "darkness" of space, to seek out new life and new civilizations.  Of course, the current Trek team often point to Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy as inspiration, with the second film in that series being titled The Dark Knight, which itself had some very dark themes.  Is this Trek sequel Star Trek's Dark Knight?  As that film grossed $1B worldwide, I imagine Paramount is certainly hoping it is.
