UPCOMING EVENTS
Away Mission to Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

7:30 p.m., Saturday, December 19, 2015
Regal Hollywood 24 @ North I-85
3265 NE Expressway Access Rd
Chamblee GA  30341
It's almost finally here!  The long-awaited seventh Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens, directed by former Star Trek film director J. J. Abrams, finally hits the theaters on Friday, December 18.  And while there is no doubt that some of our members and friends will insist on seeing it on Friday—or possibly even late Thursday night—the Republic hopes you'll join us for this very special away mission on Saturday, December 19, in order to avoid what is sure to be huge crowds on Friday.  A discussion about what day to see this movie on was held at our Early Fall Dinner Meeting in October and the overwhelming consensus was that Saturday the 19th was preferred over Friday the 18th, so if you'd like to join us for your first viewing of this movie... great!  If you can't wait and must see it on Friday, and would like to join us on Saturday for your second (or third... or fourth...) viewing, that's great, too!  In either event, it would be great for the USS Republic to make a strong showing, either in costume or not.  Please join us!

Please join us for the 7:30 p.m. showing of the 2-D format on Saturday, December 19, at the Regal Hollywood 24 in Chamblee.  The ticket price for adults is $13.05 each, which is only two dollars more than the last matinee-priced screening at 1:30 p.m. but still four dollars less than the 3-D format screening at 8:00 p.m.  As of press time, Regal management assures us that there are still plenty of seats available for that particular screening, but as we get closer to the weekend, they might go fast, so please go ahead and purchase your ticket(s) NOW by clicking the handy blue "Buy Tickets Now" button to be taken to that screening's Fandango order page.  After the movie, please assemble in the lobby for our traditional group photo!  We'll see you there!

USS Republic Away Mission!
Save the date and make plans now to join your friends and fellow Republic crewmates for this awesome once-in-a-lifetime musical event!  But don't buy your ticket yet!  The Republic has been working to secure a group discount on tickets for our crew but we'll need to collect payment for a minimum of ten tickets in advance.  We're still working with the Fox on the exact price of the tickets, so please stand by and hopefully we'll have all details confirmed and announced by next issue.  In the meantime, it would be helpful to know who's planning to attend this concert so we can give the Fox an idea of how many tickets we'll be buying... obviously, the larger our group, the greater our discount is likely to be.  At the moment, the price of tickets will likely be somewhere in the high 20s.  So if you're planning to join us, please contact the Captain and let him know to put you on the list!  Thank you!

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Four additions to Independent Star Trek Fan Film Awards panel of judges
Treklanta is pleased to announce that Matthew M. Foster, Robert Greenberger, Lawrence M. Schoen and Bjo Trimble have joined our panel of judges for the 2016 Independent Star Trek Fan Film Awards.  Treklanta is the annual Star Trek and space opera convention hosted by the USS Republic, and the Independent Star Trek Fan Film Awards were introduced at this past year's convention.

Matthew M. Foster has been the director of the Dragon Con Independent Film Festival for the last decade, bringing the best in genre short film to Atlanta.  Naturally, this has meant fan films where he's encouraged the filmmakers to go beyond fun videos into real art.  Through no desire of his own, he's become adept in the legal aspects of fan films and has worked with filmmakers on the reality of operating with intellectual properties held by others.  Mr. Foster is a fixture on the con and festival circuit, acting repeatedly as judge, speaker and even the Master of Ceremonies at TromaDance.  Recently, he's spoken at the Nebula Award Weekend as part of a course on copyright law for lawyers, and is working on the literary estate of his wife, author Eugie Foster.

Robert Greenberger is a writer and editor.  A lifelong fan of comic books, comic strips, science fiction and Star Trek, he drifted towards writing and editing, encouraged by his father and inspired by Superman's alter ego, Clark Kent.  He is the sole author of four Star Trek paperback novels (The Romulan Stratagem, Doors into Chaos, A Time to Love, A Time to Hate) and the coauthor, with Michael Jan Friedman, Peter David and/or Carmen Carter, of three more (Doomsday World, The Disinherited, Wrath of the Prophets).  He is also the author of ten additional Star Trek short stories and novellas published in various paperback anthologies and the coauthor, with Michael Jan Friedman, of Q's Guide to the Universe, a Star Trek reference book.  Mr. Greenberger wrote the script for DC Comics' Star Trek #28 (1986) and served as editor of the monthly series for three years.

Lawrence M. Schoen holds a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology, with a special focus in psycholinguistics.  He spent ten years as a college professor and has done extensive research in the areas of human memory and language.  His background in the study of human behavior and the mind provide a principal metaphor for his fiction.  He currently works as the director of research and chief compliance officer for a series of mental health and addiction recovery facilities in Philadelphia.  Dr. Schoen is also one of the world's foremost authorities on the Klingon language.  He founded the Klingon Language Institute in 1992 and since then, has championed the exploration of this constructed tongue and lectured on this unique topic throughout the world.

Bjo Trimble is a significant figure in the history of science fiction fandom in general and Star Trek in particular.  She and her husband John launched the successful "Save Star Trek" campaign, generally credited with allowing the original series to run for a third season rather than being canceled after two.  They also ran the campaign to have the first of NASA's space shuttles named Enterprise.  Mrs. Trimble's efforts earned her an uncredited role as a crew member in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, in the Recreation Deck scene.  Mrs. Trimble authored the first encyclopedic collection of data for Star Trek, The Star Trek Concordance, which contains cross-referenced details on every character, setting, event and device in every episode of the original Star Trek, its animated incarnation and, in later editions of the book, the Star Trek films.  The Concordance was used as a primary source of official canon by writers of the Star Trek universe when he first started working at Paramount.  Mrs. Trimble and her husband John have been previously announced as our special Fan Guests of Honor at the 2016 Treklanta convention.

Foster, Greenberger, Schoen and Trimble join previously seated judges Diana Dru Botsford, Keith R. A. DeCandido and Rick Sternbach.  The Independent Star Trek Fan Film Awards Ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 17, 2016, at Treklanta.  Memberships to Treklanta are currently only $35 for adults until the end of December.  Please visit www.treklanta.org for more information about Treklanta and the Independent Star Trek Fan Film Awards.

The first official trailer for Star Trek Beyond was originally scheduled to be released in theaters on Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens' opening day on December 18.  But the German language version of the trailer, including dubbed dialogue and screen credits in German, leaked on December 13 and was all over the Internet and Facebook by the next day.  Moving quickly, Paramount released the English language version of the trailer on its startrek.com web site later the same day, calling it "90 seconds of action, with glimpses of the main crew and several important newcomers, as well as flashes of humor (including a grousing Dr. McCoy), all playing out against The Beastie Boys' 'Sabotage,' a song that should ring a bell for fans of Star Trek (2009)."

ABOUT THE REPUBLIC
The USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988, at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia.  As of December 14, 2015, the Republic crew includes 35 members who are active members of STARFLEET in good standing.
The Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule of events for its members, but does not hold meetings on a consistently fixed date each month.
Because the USS Republic is a duly commissioned chapter of STARFLEET International and is bound and governed by its Constitution and By-Laws, membership in STARFLEET is a prerequisite for membership in the Republic.  STARFLEET dues for one person are $20 for a "Standard Membership" or $10 for an "E-Membership" and chapter dues are $10 per person for either membership option.  A combined payment for all dues is collected by the Republic (family discounts are available with certain conditions and restrictions).  Additional information about the two STARFLEET membership options, amounts due for additional family members, payment options and payment instructions is on the "How to Join" page of our award-winning web site.

NEWS from
New Star Trek series premieres January 2017
By StarTrek.com Staff
November 2, 2015
CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017.  The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS television network.  The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the network's digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.
The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.
The new program will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS's current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS television station live for $5.99 per month.  CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous Star Trek television series.
The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.
Alex Kurtzman will serve as executive producer for the new Star Trek TV series.  Kurtzman co-wrote and produced the blockbuster films Star Trek (2009) with Roberto Orci, and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) with Orci and Damon Lindelof.  Both films were produced and directed by J. J. Abrams.
The new series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman's Secret Hideout.  Kurtzman and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers.  Kurtzman is also an executive producer for the hit CBS television series Scorpion and Limitless, along with Kadin and Orci, and for Hawaii Five-0 with Orci.
Star Trek, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016, is one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.  The original Star Trek spawned a dozen feature films and five successful television series.  Almost half a century later, the Star Trek television series are licensed on a variety of different platforms in more than 190 countries, and the franchise still generates more than a billion social media impressions every month.
Born from the mind of Gene Roddenberry, the original Star Trek series debuted on September 8, 1966, and aired for three seasons—a short run that belied the influence it would have for generations.  The series also broke new ground in storytelling and cultural mores, providing a progressive look at topics including race relations, global politics and the environment.
"There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show's 50th anniversary celebration," said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios.  "Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we're excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately."
"This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before—directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access," said Marc DeBevoise, Executive Vice President/General Manager, CBS Digital Media.  "We've experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time.  We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series."
"Every day, an episode of the Star Trek franchise is seen in almost every country in the world," said Armando Nuñez, President and CEO, CBS Global Distribution Group.  "We can't wait to introduce Star Trek's next voyage on television to its vast global fan base."
CBS All Access offers its customers more than 7,500 episodes from the current television season, previous seasons and classic shows on demand nationwide, as well as the ability to stream local CBS stations live in more than 110 markets.  Subscribers can use the service online and across devices via CBS.com, the CBS App for iOS, Android and Windows 10, as well as on connected devices such as Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, Roku players and Roku TV, with more connected devices to come.
The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond, to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.

NEWS from
Star Trek 4 is happening, which is great news financially for its stars
By Sean O'Connell
June 2015
Paramount has made a move that solidifies the franchise for the future... and made the two centerpiece actors of the series a lot richer.
Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, who play Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock respectively, have renegotiated their deals to now include Star Trek 4.  With the move comes raises, with new salaries of about $6 million for each actor—significant increases of what they made for Star Trek and its sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness.  Pine earned $600,000 for his role in the initial Trek movie, primarily because no one knew if J. J. Abrams' timeline reset would work.  He was paid $1.5 million for Into Darkness and will make an alleged $3M for Star Trek Beyond.  The number just keeps climbing as the franchise soldiers on.
Paramount was in a tough spot because the members of its Star Trek cast are only getting more successful and, as a result, more expensive.  Aside from Pine, who has appeared in Jack Ryan reboots and Horrible Bosses 2, the new Trek family has to eventually afford Karl Urban, Simon Pegg (who is co-writing Star Trek Beyond), John Cho, Anton Yelchin and–wait for it—Zoe Saldana, who has Marvel and James Cameron vying for her time.  The actress has roles in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and multiple Avatar sequels that will be demanind her time. If Paramount wants her to keep playing Uhura, they are going to have to pay her in similar ways to how they are paying Pine and Quinto.
