The
Royal Manticoran Navy (TRMN) is the fan association for the
Honor Harrington series written by David Weber and SphinxCon
is the newest literary military science fiction and fantasy
convention ("litcon") dedicated to the Honorverse.
Leveraging the experience of sponsoring and running
HonorCon in Raleigh, North Carolina, and MantiCon in Minneapolis,
Minnesota, a group of TRMN members thought to continue the
tradition in Atlanta. Being the home of Dragon*Con and
a plethora of other conventions throughout the year, as well
as being a major airline hub, it was felt that the concept
could be taken to the next level. This is the very
first SphinxCon!
But...
Where's the Trek?
Here it is! The relocation of Axanar Productions,
which created the award-winning Star Trek fan film
"Prelude to Axanar," to OWC Studios in Lawrenceville
(northeast of Atlanta), gave us an opportunity to host AxaCon,
the official convention of Axanar, for all fans of Star
Trek and the Axanar universe. Creators and actors
from "Prelude to Axanar" will preview the upcoming
two parts of “The Four Years War” as well as fill you in on
every detail of the Axanar Universe you could ever want to
know!
SphinxCon guest of honor David Gerrold (author, "The
Trouble with Tribbles" and much more) joins AxaCon guests
of honor J. G. Hertzler (Martok from Star Trek:
Deep Space Nine), Gary Graham (Ambassador Soval
from Star Trek: Enterprise) and a slate of Axanar and
other Star Trek fan film actors and creators. More
information about guests, programming, special events and
admission prices can be found on the AxaCon
page of the SphinxCon web site. |

Editor's
Note: While the primary purpose of this publication is
to announce and promote upcoming chapter and Star Trek-themed
events and activities, its secondary but equally vital purpose
is to serve as the official organ of important recent (or...
not-so-recent) chapter business. The publication schedule
of The Republiqué over the last two years has been
somewhat... inconsistent for a number of reasons. With
the recent relaunch of this publication (please note the "Volume
II" issue numbering), articles about important chapter events
that took place as long as nearly two years ago will be published
here in order to ensure that those events are properly documented
and archived for future reference and posterity. Those
articles will be published under a new header called News
from the Atavachron. |

Admiral
Kelly Hilliard (right) congratulates then-Fleet Captain
Eric L. Watts (left) on being reelected as the Republic's
Commanding Officer.
|
At the
USS Republic's annual Holiday Party & Potluck Dinner
on December 17, 2016, in an election conducted by Admiral
Kelly Hilliard, then-Fleet Captain Eric L. Watts
was reelected by voice vote to an unprecedented sixth two-year
term as the chapter's Commanding Officer (CO) by members in
good standing in attendance. Watts was first elected
as the Republic's CO in May 2006 to serve the remainder
of the previous CO's term and was reelected to his first full
two-year term in December 2006. He was reelected for
additional two-year terms in December 2008, 2010, 2012 and
2014, is the Republic's 13th Commanding Officer and
(as of October 2018) has now served in that position for 12½
years.
On
the same occasion, Admiral Mike Henigan declined to
be nominated for a third term as the chapter's Executive Officer
(XO). Admiral Mike had served as XO of the Republic
since December 2012, accepting the position upon the conclusion
of "The Year of the Phoenix," the year-long process of decommissioning
the USS Atlanta, of which Admiral Mike had served as
CO for the previous six years, and reassigning her crew to
the USS Republic. Admiral Mike remains a
member in good standing of the Republic and is the
chapter's highest ranking officer.
|
Then-Fleet
Captain Eric L. Watts (left) congratulates then-Ensign
First Class Tracey S. Harwell on being elected as
the Republic's Executive Officer.
|
Then-Ensign
First Class Tracey S. Harwell was nominated and elected
as the Republic's XO in another voice vote conducted
by Admiral Kelly. Ensign Tracey promised to take an
active role in helping to plan and coordinate future chapter
activities. She was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade
shortly after her election as XO. |

ABOUT
THE REPUBLIC
|
The
USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned
as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988,
at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia. As
of October 23, 2018, the Republic crew includes 35
members who are active members of STARFLEET in good
standing.
|
The
Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule
of events for its members, but does not hold meetings
on a consistently fixed date each month.
|
Because
the USS Republic is a duly commissioned chapter
of STARFLEET International and is bound and governed by
its Constitution and By-Laws, membership in STARFLEET
is a prerequisite for membership in the Republic. STARFLEET
membership dues are $5 for one person and Republic
chapter dues are $10 ($15 total). The Republic
collects a single combined dues payment for both groups
and remits the STARFLEET portion to them on the Republic
member's behalf. STARFLEET offers family discounts
for additional members as shown below. Additional
information about membership options, amounts due for
additional family members, payment options and instructions
for other forms of payment is on the "How to Join" page
of our award-winning web site.
