Volunteer Staff Meeting
#3

p.m., Saturday, March 9, 2019
Challenges Games & Comics
2050 Lawrenceville Hwy, Decatur 30033 |
|
Anyone
and everyone interested in joining the Treklanta team as a
staff volunteer is invited to attend the third Volunteer Staff
Meeting of the year at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, at
Challenges
Games & Comics at North DeKalb Mall in
Decatur. This
is the same date and location as the Atlanta
Sci-Fi & Fantasy Expo, so if you're already planning
to attend that event, you'll already be there! If
you're not planning to attend that event, please join us for
this very important meeting. Volunteers are needed
in ALL DEPARTMENTS, which include:
Convention

Ideally, we will ask you to serve three four-hour duty shifts
during the weekend, one shift on each day (Friday, Saturday
and Sunday), but the number of volunteers needed in each department
and the number of hours each volunteer may be asked to serve
vary from department to department depending on each department's
needs, and we also understand that not all volunteers will
attend the convention on all three days. For example,
Guest Transportation and the Fan Film Festival will only need
two or three volunteers each while Convention Operations,
Technical Operations and Security will need many more. If
you have a special expertise, previous experience or strong
interest in a particular department, we'll assign you to the
department of your choice. If you're able and willing
to serve in one or more departments, i.e., "wherever I'm needed,"
we can accommodate that, too.
All volunteers who are not members of the USS Republic
will be asked to purchase a staff badge for $10. This
is a mere fraction of the $50 at-the-door price of a full
weekend membership and a great way to attend the convention
on a budget. Staff fees are applied to certain overhead
expenses that are shared by all guests, volunteers and attendees
such as badges, lanyards, audio/visual equipment rental, Internet
connectivity fees and con suite refreshments. Members
of the USS Republic are exempt from the staff badge
fee but must attend at least three (out of six) volunteer
staff meetings. Anyone who wishes to join the USS Republic
should visit the How
to Join or Renew page. Staff badges may
be purchased online at treklanta.org/volunteer
or in person at any staff meeting.
At the meeting, you will have the opportunity to meet many
of Treklanta's senior directors, learn how the convention
in general and your requested department in particular operate,
and ask any questions you may have.
This meeting will be held in the Game Room in the back of
Challenges. PLEASE RSVP by clicking the "Yes" or
"Going" button on the Facebook
event page. THANK YOU and we look forward to seeing
you! |

|
The
Atlanta Sci-Fi & Fantasy Expo's showrunners are all lifelong
fans of all things geeky and wanted to provide an opportunity
for the community to experience a full-scale fan event without
some of the typical expenses. Now
in its fifth year, the Expo will again celebrate pop culture
creators with a family-friendly event at North DeKalb Mall.
Artists, writers, actors, game designers, animators,
modelers, cosplayers, content developers and fans will gather
to share their craft, instruct and inspire others to explore
their own fannish interests. The two-day event features
panels, workshops, gaming tournaments, live entertainment
and a Vendor Hall/Artist's Alley. The event is
free and open to the public!
The
USS Republic will have a panel at ASFE! Republic
CO Comm Eric L. Watts will present "Star Trek
Fandom in Atlanta" at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The
panel will promote the Republic and our annual convention,
Treklanta, as well as other Star Trek-related events

10 miles from downtown Atlanta. The mall has plenty
of free parking and is also accessible via MARTA and the Emory
University Cliff Shuttles. The Decatur and Avondale
MARTA stations (on the Blue line) are the closest rail stops,
although not within walking distance. Two bus routes
service the mall: Bus 123 at the Decatur Station and Bus 75

ABOUT
THE REPUBLIC
|
The
USS Republic NCC-1371 was originally commissioned
as a chapter of STARFLEET International on May 14, 1988,
at the Dixie-Trek convention in Atlanta, Georgia. As
of March 6, 2019, the Republic crew includes 40
members who are active members of STARFLEET in good
standing.
|
The
Republic plans and coordinates an active schedule
of events for its members, but does not hold meetings
on a consistently fixed date each month.
|
Because
the USS Republic is a duly commissioned chapter
of STARFLEET International and is bound and governed by
its Constitution and By-Laws, membership in STARFLEET
is a prerequisite for membership in the Republic. STARFLEET
membership dues are $5 for one person and Republic
chapter dues are $10 ($15 total). The Republic
collects a single combined dues payment for both groups
and remits the STARFLEET portion to them on the Republic
member's behalf. STARFLEET offers family discounts
for additional members as shown below. Additional
information about membership options, amounts due for
additional family members, payment options and instructions
for other forms of payment is on the "How to Join" page
of our award-winning web site.

More
production details for Star Trek Picard series emerge,
including possible title |
By Anthony Pascale
March 4, 2019
|
The
new Star Trek series starring Sir Patrick Stewart
returning to his Next Generation role of Jean Luc-Picard
continues to take shape, with a few new details on the upcoming
production coming to light. |
Shooting
reportedly starts April 14 |
The latest issue of Production Weeklya reliable
industry newsletterhas some more details for the upcoming
Picard show's production. According to the report,
the Picard show will begin shooting on April 14 with production
going for five and a half months, with a planned wrap on
October 1. While this is a shorter production run
than the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discoverywhich
ran about eight monthsthe Picard series is expected
to have fewer episodes, with the first season being described
as a 10-hour movie. |
Santa
Clarita will be home to Picard show |
In
December, it was reported that, unlike Star Trek: Discovery
and Short Treks, the new Picard show would not be shot at
Pinewood Studios in Toronto, Canada, with CBS securing $15.6
million in tax credits to shoot in California. According
to the new report, the production will be based at Santa
Clarita Studios. SCS is an independent studio
production facility based in Santa Clarita, California,
about 35 miles north of Paramount Studios in Hollywood,
where most previous Star Trek TV series and films
were produced. |
The
selection of SCS may explain Patrick Stewart's curious comment
last month that the show would be shooting in "the middle
of California." While the era of peak TV has made
studio space in the Hollywood area sparse, the choice of
Santa Clarita Studios may have been by Sir Patrick himself,
who is also an executive producer on the series. Stewart
is familiar with SCS, having shot his two-season Starz comedy
Blunt Talk there in 2015 and 2016. |
SCS
has 16 stages and has been in operation since 1987. CBS
has used SCS in the past, including shooting five seasons
of CSI: Crime Scene Investigations there. Santa
Clarita Valley is a popular destination for film production,
touting nearly half of all permitted location activity in
Los Angeles County. |
Picard
show may be called Star Trek: Destiny |
The
title of the new Picard show has yet to be officially announced. However,
the Production Weekly report lists the title of the
series as "Star Trek: Destiny (a.k.a. Star
Trek: Picard)" with the working title listed as
"Drawing Room." "Picard" has been a shorthand used
by people involved in the show to talk about it, although
Star Trek: Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green recently
indicated the show could actually use "Picard" as a title. |
It's
important to note that CBS has not confirmed Star Trek:
Destiny as a title, although it is one of a number of
titles that CBS has trademarked over the last year. CBS
has also trademarked other titles including Star Trek:
Revolution as well as a number of others more obviously
tied to other shows that have been or still are in development,
such as Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek:
Starfleet Academy. So for now, take Destiny
as a possibility, but with a grain of space salt. |
Casting
has started |
On
Friday, it was reported that CBS had tapped director Hannelle
Culpepper to helm the first two episodes of the Picard series.
As of yet, the only confirmed member of the cast for
the show is Sir Patrick Stewart himself, returning to play
Jean-Luc Picard. But with cameras set to start rolling
in six weeks, that should be changing soon. Replying
to a question about if casting had begun on Twitter, Culpepper
confirmed it has already started. |
There
has been a rumor report regarding some possible character
descriptions for the show, but we have not been able to
confirm these as of this time. Official announcements
of casting are likely to begin this month, which can start
to shed some light on the other characters for the series. |
